Chromium(III) Acetylacetonate (Cr(acac)₃) for Quantitative NMR and Faster Heteronuclear Detection
Chromium(III) acetylacetonate (Cr(acac)₃) is a paramagnetic relaxation reagent that significantly reduces spin–lattice relaxation times (T₁). It enables faster data acquisition, particularly for heteronuclei such as 29Si.
In quantitative 13C NMR spectroscopy, Cr(acac)₃ suppresses the Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE), ensuring that signal intensities remain proportional to the number of equivalent nuclei. This makes it an essential additive for accurate and reliable quantitative measurements.
Key Benefits
- Reduces T₁ relaxation times and shortens experiment times, especially in 29Si NMR
- Suppresses NOE for accurate quantitative 13C NMR measurements
- Highly soluble in common organic solvents such as CDCl₃ and DMSO-d₆
Application Notes
Typical concentrations range from 0.025–0.05 M for quantitative 13C NMR. Higher concentrations may be used for 29Si and other low-sensitivity heteronuclei, depending on the application. Excessive amounts can lead to line broadening and reduced spectral resolution. Due to its paramagnetic nature, Cr(acac)₃ is generally not recommended for routine 1H NMR experiments.
